Job Summary:
The candidate for Bus Monitor will possess the skills and ability to assist the Bus Driver in providing a safe means of transportation services for children and families by assisting with loading and unloading children from the bus, assisting children to be seated and appropriately restrained during transportation, and monitoring activities during transport. In addition, this individual will have the ability to respond in an appropriate manner during stress or abnormal occurrences.
Education and Experience
- Meet requirements of Head Start Program Performance Standards and/or Kentucky Division of Regulated Childcare.
- High school Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
Knowledge and Skills
- Communicate orally and in writing effectively and demonstrate effective listening skills, respect, be concise and clear, and provide positive body language and empathy with valid feedback.
- Have strong communication skills.
- Must have the ability to use Microsoft Office and other software programs for documentation, record-keeping, monitoring, and reporting.
- Maintain strong organizational skills (organizational skills listed below are not all inclusive).
- Ability to create structure and order to boost productivity.
- Ability to prioritize tasks that must be completed immediately, versus those that can be postponed.
- Ability to develop work habits that prevent procrastination, clutter, miscommunication, and inefficiency.
- Ability to keep work and work area neat and organized.
- Ability to meet deadlines in a timely manner.
- Support family engagement through relationship-based competencies.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to physically lift a minimum of 50 pounds, be able to physically move in a manner suitable to provide care for small children (kneel, crawl, bend, stoop, squat, walk fast/run) and work outdoors in seasonal weather conditions. Must be able to climb stairs, get up/down from floor, sit/stand for long periods of time.
Duties and Responsibilities
Must comply with all BGP Policies & Procedures, Head Start Performance Standards, Kentucky Childcare Regulations, Health, Fire, Safety, and other applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
- Responsible to assist the Bus Driver to present a pleasant, safe environment conducive to positive learning experiences to ensure the bus is an extension of the classroom.
- Will assist the bus driver in maintaining discipline on the school bus and report to the driver any behavior concerns.
- Will monitor loading and unloading passengers and assist them while the bus is in operation.
- Responsible for assisting buckle and unbuckle seat restraints for children and other individuals as needed.
- Responsible for documentation of Attendance log and no child left behind paperwork that is in the Monitor’s clipboard binder.
- Responsible to assist the Bus Driver in all situations including but not limited to passenger illness, emergency drills, accidents/incidents, etc.
